Biography

Phebe Williams was a daughter of George and Sarah Williams of Taunton, Massachusetts. By name order in her father's will,^[1] she was likely their oldest daughter. Her gravestone inscription, as transcribed, implies she was born around 1734,^[2] which is doubtful, though, because her parents were married in 6 January 1736.^[3] Thus, a birth in late 1736 is a reasonable guess.

Phebe married John Hart, perhaps in 1754 or '55, judging by the ages of their two known children.^[4]

John Hart died on 10 May 1757, in his 30th year.^[4]

Phebe married, second, Simeon Tisdale, on 15 February 1759.^[5] From his from first marriage to Abigail Williams, a daughter of judge James Williams and a 3rd cousin to Phebe, Simeon had four children -- Joseph, James, Simeon and Abigail -- who became wards of their uncle, Brig. Gen. James Williams.

• John Tisdale, b. 1759 or '60, d. 30 June 1761^[6]
• Phebe Tisdale, b. bef. December 1762, d. bef. December 1763^[7][8]

Simeon died in intestate in a sailing accident on his way to Newport on 1 February 1762.^[9] Phebe became administrix of his estate.^[10]

Twice-widowed, Phebe married, third, Eliphaz Harlow, who was twice a widower himself, on 27 Apr 1763 in Taunton.^[11] No children are known to have been born to this couple.

12 Jan 1790 -- Phebe Harlow, widow, administrix of the estate of Eliphaz Harlow, with licence to sell real estate, having posted notifications, having put up at vendue the westerly part of the said deceased's late dwelling, saving right of third as dower, sell to George Williams having bid 50 pounds. Witnesses: Sally Harlow, Seth Padelford. In the following recorded deed, George Williams sold this same property to Phebe Harlow on 8 February 1790 for 50 pounds.^[12]

14 Oct 1791 -- Phebe Harlow lease to Simeon Tisdale, Joseph Tisdale, Sam Fales, David Carver, land set off as dower in the etate of Simeon Tisdale, late of Taunton. Wits: Phebe Gulliver, James Williams^[13]

Phebe died in 1813.^[2]

Administration of her estate fell to the the daughter of her last husband, Sally Harlow, who relinquished her right in favor of Simeon Tisdale Carver, who was a step-grandson of Phebe's, being the son David and Hannah (Harlow) Carver.^[14]
