Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Mary Williams is a part of US Black heritage.

Mary Williams was interviewed in Hazen, Arkansas in about 1937 about her life and her time as an enslaved person.

Mary's interviewer did not quote Mary in her report. Most of the interview was "Hant" experiences.

Mary Williams mother's name was Mariah and before she married her master forced her to go wrong and she had a son by him. They all called him Jim Rob. He was a mulatta. They Mariah married Williams on General Garretts farm. The Rob Roy farm and the Garrett farm joined. Mary was born at Rob Roy, Arkansas, near Humphrey.


Interview: Mary Williams was interviewed in Hazen, Arkansas by Irene Robertson as part of the Federal Writer's Project of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The results are made available by the Library of Congress. [1]
