Richard Walter Wilkinson was born on 4 February 1886 in Strandtown, Belfast, on of John Wilkinson and Martha Williams^{[1] [2]}

In the 1911 Ireland Census, Census, John Wilkinson (66, head, Presbyterian, married, Cuff, Linen Collar Manufacturer, b. Belfast) lived at 33 in Victoria Road (Holywood Urban, Down) with his son, Richard Walter Wilkinson (25, Presbyterian, single, Linen Collar Manufacturer b. Down), and servant Annie Symth (45, widow, R Catholic, , b. Co Down) ^[3]

He married Ivy Muriel Burrowes Basset (youngest daughter of the late Mr Thomas Bassett, Hornby, Chriistchurch) on 1 Jan 1915 at Belfast, Ireland

The bridegroom was Richard Walter Wilkinson, second lieutenant, 14th Service Battalion, Manchester Regiment, son of Mr. John Wilkinson, Linden, Malone Park, Belfast. The bride was Miss Ivy Muriel Burrowes Bassett, youngest daughter of the late Mr Thomas Bassett, Hornby, Chriistchurch, and Mrs Bassett. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Canon Davis, M.A., assisted by the Rev. T. G. Wilkinson (cousin of the bridegroom). ^[5]
