Clay was born in 1892 in Casey County, Kentucky. He was the son of James Wilcher and Adaline Reed. James was a huckster/peddler in 1900, and the family was large, with eleven children, plus a son-in-law and three grandchildren all living in the same home. Two older sons were farm hands.
Clay registered for the WWI draft on 5 June 1917. He was described as tall and slender, with blue eyes and light-colored hair.[1] He married Deletta Neves on 9 November 1919. He was 27 and Deletta was 25.[2] The couple lived with Clay's father when the census was taken in 1920. Clay was working as a farm laborer.
In 1930 and 1940, the family had grown, adding six children to his family. Father, James, lived with the family. Clay supported them by farming.
Clay was 49 when he registered for the WWII draft. His hair had greyed and he was a still-slender 150 lbs.[3]
He passed away in 1966,[4] and is buried in Russell Cemetery in Liberty, Casey, Kentucky next to his wife.[5]
