Mary was born about 1773. She is the daughter of James Wightman and Hannah Wightman.
After marriage Mary Wightman and husband located in Halifax, Windham County, Vermont, where probably all of their children were born. It is likely that Archibald Gaut was born in Halifax, although he and Mary were doubtless married in either Albany or Herkimer County, New York. Later the family removed from Vermont to Mexico, Oswego County, New York, where the children were reared.
It is stated by a descendant that the family name was originally Gaut, and that Archibald deserted his wife and children, after which the family changed the name to Goit. The birthdates of the children were furnished the compiler by Mr. William H. G. Goit of Dayton, Ohio, from family papers in his possession.
probably in Mexico, Oswego County, New York.
