Biography

Valentine Whitman, Jr. was born in Providence, Rhode Island on Aug. 25, 1668, to Valentine Whitman, Sr., and his wife, Mary (her last name is unknown).[1]

Valentine, Jr. married Sarah Bartlett on 12 December 1694 in Providence, Rhode Island.

That same year, he built a large family home that is one of the oldest stone-ender (a uniquely Rhode Island building style) still standing and mostly original. The first town meeting of Smithfield, which included present-day Lincoln, was held in this house in 1730. He and Sarah would have 9 children together and, like his father, Valentine would become a Captain of the local militia.

His will is dated 4 Aug 1750 and proved 25 Sep 1750 in Smithfield, Rhode Island. [2] His inventory is recorded on 31 August 1750, in the heading of the inventory it reads, "departed this Life ye 26th day of August Anno Domini 1750".

The image of the text about the Williams and Whitman families certainly states that it was Valentine Whitman, Sr. who was the Indian interpreter. Also, the date quoted in the biography above, 1668, is the same year Jr. was born.

So, is there evidence that Valentine Whitman, Jr. was ALSO an Indian interpreter, or was it just his father?
