Biography

'New York state flag'
Charles White was born in New York.
English flag
Charles White has English ancestors.

Charles Watkins White was born in 1846 in Havana (present day Montour Falls), Yates County, New York.[1][2] He was the son of Daniel White and Irene F. Watkins. In 1850, their family lived in Milo, Yates County, New York and in 1860 they lived in Charlotte, Schuyler County, New York. His father was a tinner.[3][4]

Charles married Mary Sophia Back around 1870.[5] Their oldest child, George Arthur Daniel White (a governor of Ohio), was born in Elmira, Chemung County, New York in 1872. Charles went broke in the Panic of 1873 and the family then started over in Titusville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania,[6] where Charles was a jeweller. Their daughter Bertha O White was born there in 1875.[7][5]

Charles passed away on 5 Nov 1904 in Titusville, Pennsylvania.[2] He was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Titusville.[8]

Research Notes

  • Birthplace and parents: Charles's death record says he was born in Havana (present day Mountour Falls), New York[2] which is in Yates County and located mostly within the boundary of the Town of Milo. His daughter Bertha's death certificate[9] and his son George's passport application[10] say he was born in Penn Yan, New York, which is in Schuyler County. His 1880 and 1900 census records say he and his mother were born in New York while his father was born in England.[7][5] There is only one Charles White of the right age that is found in/near these two locations in the 1850 and 1860 census records and has a father born in England - he is the son of Daniel and Irene F White, who lived in Milo, Yates County, New York in 1850[3] and Charlotte, Schuyler County, New York in 1860.[4] This suggests that Havana is his correct birth location.
  • Middle name "Watkins" is recorded in a marriage announcement for his son George.[11]
  • Father's Birthplace: England
  • Mother's Birthplace: New York, United States
  • Occupation: Jeweler
