Samuel Ethelbert White was born about 1828 in Canterbury. A chorister there at six, he becomes a supervisor for Her Majesty’s Excise. Perhaps this is fitting, since his father Samuel White (who had been born in Canterbury in 1802, married Elizabeth Mary Hatton, also a ‘Canterbury lass’, in 1822, lived in the St Alphage area of Canterbury all his life and died in 1870) was a collector of ‘poor rate’ taxes for the Crown.
Samuel Ethelbert married Catherine Veri Vlieland in Plea Norwich, Norfolk on the 2nd of August 1855. They moved to Winchester, Kent by the time their first child, Elisabeth is born in 1859 and they are still at Winchester for the births of Charles, Bertha, Ethelbert, William and finally another Samuel in 1870. The census shows them at home with a live in servant. They have, however, moved to London by the time of the 1871 census. They move, again, from Wandsworth to Stratford-le-Bow and Samuel Ethelbert’s death is registered in Fulham in 1886. Catherine survives him for nearly thirty years. Her death is recorded in Kensington in 1916; aged 82. Having earlier stayed with Ethelbert and his wife, she has lived alone for some time.
