P. G. Buckles and Eva Wheeler were married about 1918. She was born September 24,1891 in St. Clair, Missouri, and died about 1970 in Kansas City, Jackson, Missouri.
The notes below were dictated to Gloria Buckles Reid from 21 June 1998 to 24 June 1998 and signed by Delilah Pierce Buckles who was the sister-in-law of Eva Wheeler Buckles:
“P. G. and daughter, Nancy, were alone because his wife had a breakdown, and she was committed to an asylum.
About 1927, Eva began to behave strangely. She sang beautifully and was very talented, but sometimes she would begin to play the piano and sing and would not stop –she just went on and on. At that time, stores made grocery deliveries, and every day she would order a pound of butter. One time, she even locked family members out of the house. She would do things like putting on her corset over her outside clothing. P.G. tried to keep her at home, but she became violent and threatening. At night, when he went to bed, he would have to take their daughter into his room and lock and barricade the door for their safety.”
Eva lived until sometime in the 1970s- Orland Buckles, who was her husband’s nephew, kept track of her, and when she died, he handled the funeral arrangements. There was no funeral…only a visitation. Orland Buckles and Gloria Buckles Reid were the only attendees at the visitation[1]
