Biography

Isaac Wheeler

Birth: 1646 Lynn, Essex County, Massachusetts
Death: January 5, 1712 Stonington, New London, Connecticut

Caution, Two Isaac Wheelers, Two Martha Parks, Etc.

Apparently there were not only two Isaac Wheelers, and both with daughters named Mary. There were also two Martha Parks who were 1st cousins.[1]

This Isaac Wheeler was born c. 1646 at Lynn, Massachusetts, the son of Thomas Wheeler & Mary Unknown. Isaac was baptized the same day as his sister, Zipporah Wheeler, on 19 Nov 1648 in Salem MA (see attached images from Salem Vital Records). There is actually little or no primary-source documentation that Isaac was a child of Thomas Wheeler (see Smith family source below) but they both sold property in Lynn MA and both ended up in Stonington CT and Isaac is generally accepted as Thomas' son. Close examination of Essex Co. land deeds at familysearch might uncover Isaac selling property that Thomas previously owned.

He married January 1677 to Martha Park, daughter of Thomas Park & Dorothy Thompson. He died at Stonington, Connecticut on 5 January 1712, aged 66 yrs per his headstone.[1]

The other Isaac Wheeler was born in 1642, the son of Ephraim Wheeler and Ann Turney. He married to Susanna Unknown. He died on 1 April 1712 at Stratfield Connecticut, aged 70 yrs per his headstone.[1]

Origin

Parents:

Thomas Wheeler b. 1602, Cranfield, Bedford, England, d. 06 Mar 1686, Stonington, New London, Connecticut.
Mary (Unknown) Wheeler, b. c. 1600 is a guess, (based on husband's birth), d. 1680, Stonington, New London County, Connecticut. See Thomas Wheeler's profile for more discussion on his apparent 2 wives, both named Mary. The first was Beckley and appears in Cranfield parish registers, the second is unknown.

By 1667, Isaac's father, Thomas Wheeler, removed from Lynn to Stonington, Connecticut. His friendship with Rev. James Noyes, who also removed to Stonington in the same year, may have been the reason for the change.[2]

Family

Isaac was married (by Thomas Stanton), on 10 January 1667 at Stonington, to Martha Parke (b. 27 Oct 1646, Wethersfield, Hartford, Conn - d. 14 Feb 1717), the daughter of Thomas Park and Dorothy Thompson.[2]

They had ten children:[2]

  1. Mary Wheeler, b. 22 Nov 1668, Stonington, d. 03 Nov 1709, Stonington; m. Ebenezer Williams (d d. 1747), they had 9 children.
  2. Martha Wheeler, b. 06 Feb 1670, Stonington, d. c. 1744/5; m. John Williams, cousins of Ebenezer, Mary and Martha had a double wedding on Jan. 24, 1687
  3. Thomas Wheeler, b. 01 Dec 1671, Stonington, d. 1691 murdered by indians.[1]
  4. Isaac Wheeler, Jr., b. 05 Aug 1673, Stonington, d. 25 Jun 1737, Stonington; m. Mary Shepard

Four (4) erroneous children of this Isaac Wheeler were detached from this birth family today, including the two mentioned in previous messages below. They belong to the "other" Isaac Wheeler.

Wheeler-6670 and Wheeler-255 do not represent the same person because: The biography of Wheeler-255 CLEARLY explains that there are 2 similar Isaac Wheeler people born and dies about the same time and locations, with 2 different sets of parents. I added the info to Wheeler-6670 to further avoid future confusion.

In view of the "Caution" note embedded in this profile for Isaac Wheeler b. 1646, we must strongly consider detaching the ostensible child Mary (Wheeler) Sherwood [Wheeler-1724] from this particular profile. Several justifications for this:

1) The input birth data for Wheeler-1724 are about 1683 in Fairfield, CT, which is not proximate to Stonington where this particular Isaac Wheeler was located and having children at this same time; 2) this birth family already contained a Mary Wheeler, b. 22 Nov 1668, who lived to adulthood and married Ebenezer Williams, thus it is improbable that a later child would be identically named Mary. Perhaps Wheeler-1724 is the 'Mary' daughter of the "other" Isaac Wheeler (b. 1642) that is mentioned in the Caution note.

In view of the "Caution" note embedded in this profile for Isaac Wheeler b. 1646, we must strongly consider detaching the ostensible child Sarah (Wheeler) Odell [Wheeler-3233] from this particular profile. Several justifications for this:

1) The input birth date for Wheeler-3233 is 12 Dec 1666, which is over a year before the marriage date of this Isaac Wheeler with Martha Parke. 2) Sarah's ostensible birth place was Fairfield, Connecticut, which is not proximate to Stonington where this particular Isaac Wheeler was located. 3) There seems to be no reference which associates this particular Isaac Wheeler with a 'Susanna Hall', the indicated mother of Wheeler-3233. 4) Wheeler's History of Stonington etc., p. 637 does not list a 'Sarah' among the 10 children of this particular Isaac Wheeler.

In investigating the proposed merge of Wheeler-2433 and Wheeler-1724, I find we have a problem. The 1st wife of Isaac Wheeler is not known, and there are no known children by her. That she was a Mary or Martha is strictly speculation. Add to that the fact that The Isaac who married Susannah (??) Hall (and was the father of Mary, wife of Henry Jackson) was the son of Ephraim, not Thomas, and we have a mess. I suggest we have a conversation and determine just how to sort it out. To start with, let's read: the 1919 Wheeler Family in America (A.G. Wheeler); Jacobus' Old Fairfield, p.668+; NEHGS, v.163, p. 262+, Identifying Anna Wheeler of Stonington CT; & The Wheeler Genealogy, R.D. Wheeler, 1993. Hopefully we can then make it accurate.
