Biography

Extracted from speech Ernest Wheatley gave at the 6th Wheatley Reunion July 15-16,1978: [1]

My father, Leander Dorn WHEATLEY, the fourth son of William Beauregard and Marmen Conley, was born on the Wheatley Branch 07 July 1887. That was 91 years ago, nearly a century ago. That's why this generation is nearly gone.

On 06 May 1906 at Chapmanville, West Virginia he married my mother, Georgia Ann Bias. To them were born 10 children: 1. Edith deceased; 2. Myself Ernest; 3. An infant deceased; 4 Flossie deceased; 5. Una deceased; 6. Fred; 7. Wilson; 8. Francis deceased; 9. Elizabeth; 10. David deceased. Counting the in-laws, 40% of this generation is gone.

...My dad went to Marshall College at Huntington, West Virginia, studied engineering, took his knowledge of engineering and the design of sawmills and began building sawmills. He built repaired and remodeled sawmills with capacities of 4 to 12 thousand board feet an hour. That equals about 6 railroad cars or a dozen tractor trailer loads a day. The largest saw mill "Lee" remodeled was at Rainelle, West Virginia, owned by Meadow River Lumber Company; three band-saws under one roof with 100M feet capacity a day. "Lee" also built other buildings, such as: A theatre building in Montgomery, W. Va. and some Coal tipples, one at the head of Bracken's Creek in Fayette County.

...Dad was a good companion, teacher and instructor, as well as a good father. It was here (Russellville) we survived the flu during the winter of '17 and '18. Dad stayed at home and waited on us. The flu got so bad the mill closed down and Dad helped the doctor care for those that were sick. It was here he got his nickname, "Doc".
