Lemuel Edwards Whaley was born on 19 March 1859 in Alabama. He was the son of William Joseph Whaley and Margaret Mint (Crowell) Whaley. The names of his parents were recorded on his Alabama death record.[1] He was listed in his father's household on the 1860 United States Census and the 1870 United States Census.[2][3] When the 1880 United States Census was taken, he, his parents, and one of his siblings were recorded living in the household of Salina Thomas.[4] On all three of these censuses, the Whaleys were living in Pike County, Alabama.
L. E. Whaley and Emma Harris were married on 24 Feb 1887 in Coffee County, Alabama.[5] Emma appears with him on the 1900 United States Census for Pike County, Alabama, along with three children, Lester Whaley, Ella May Whaley, and Crowell Whaley. "Lem" was working as a farmer. Another child, Lemuel Whaley Jr, had been added to the family by 1910 according to the United States Census, taken that year. The only child remaining in their household when the 1920 United States Census was taken was "L. E." Whaley.[6]
