I have done a free DNA test with Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation (SMGF) in 2007 for research and was surpose to be able to see results and those persons related to me for free. Unfortunately they sold this to a private genealogy company who wanted members to pay to see results.

Don't know what happen after that point.

I have now done an Ancestry DNA test.

I began a One Name search of all WESTON's in Australia and then New Zealand trying to find my ancestors and descendants, willing to pass on what I have. All information stored on Microsoft Excel spreadsheets.

Mr Don A. Weston
Born 1950s.
Ancestors ancestors
Brother of , , [private sister (1950s - unknown)] and [private brother (1960s - unknown)] [half]

Biography

Served in the Australian Army for 38 years (CMF, ARA, Emergency Reserve and GRes).

From conversations by my Grandmother on my Father's side and not paying much attention when young I got interested later and started my Genealogy search in South Australia while posted there, finding information on the LAUCHS side of the family.

When I retired it became more of a obsession. I began a One Name Search of all WESTON's in Australia then later New Zealand trying to find out information on my ancestors. I try to help and pass on any of my WESTON research to other WESTON descendants/researchers on any of the lines I have.

My One Name WESTON information is held on Microsoft Excel spreadsheets over 100 for Australia and 20 for New Zealand.

Hi Don, in answer to your question about the merchant navy, we have this category Category: Australian Merchant Navy, World War II Is that the one you used?

Regards, Margaret

Margaret, thanks for the reply, No I used the WWII category, how do I cahnge it to the Merchant Navy?

He served on about 6 ships between 12 Feb 1943 - 4 Dec 1948. (Series # J2851 Control symbol Q1321 Barcode 1911225). I will have to go through my documents to locate them, last saw them when we got him added to the WWII Nominal Roll.

Hi Don, just delete the one you used and add the merchant navy one to his profile. Is the profile an open one? If so, and you give me the link to his profile I can do it for you.
Thanks, his profile is https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/McPartland-67

Still learning how to do things.

Thank you very much, do you know if they put the MN Badge on the profile?

Don there isn't a specific badge for the merchant navy, you could use the Veteran Recognition sticker, but there is currently no image there for the Merchant Navy. Do you have an image for the MN badge?
I found this on Google:

Hi Don, I think the image has to be uploaded to WikiTree to be able to be used, I'm going to ask another member who I know is much better at this stuff. Regards Margaret
Thanks Margaret, I'm sure there are a lot of other descendants with family members who have served.

Hi Don, my contact used the red ensign flag and a wheel and anchor to make the image, you can see the resulting sticker on this page, it's the last example under Veteran Recognition sticker, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Military_and_War_Stickers:_Examples_for_Australian_Profiles#Veteran_Recognition

See what you think, the template can be copied and the dates and text changed to suit your profile.

Regards, Margaret

Margaret thanks, I didn't know that these templates existed.

Great help thanks again.

Dear Don,

thank you so much for all of your work on the Weston tree! A brief conversation recently with my father revealed that there was apparently some connection between the Weston family of Buckland, VIC and the Jacob family but no details were known. Well, suffice to say, the game was afoot and after a few BDM searches that showed the marriage of my Great-Aunt Catherine Esther Fitzgerald of Buckland to George Charles Weston, I then happened across your work here...which has been a boon! I immediately dusted off Diann Talbot's texts and found plenty of Westons represented. Too bad I didn't have this info on my last (and rare) trip to Bright. It's a nice thought that all of these families of the Buckland with which we become a little more acquainted over time (in my case, Jacob, Fitzgerald, and now Weston) were all working, laughing (and probably crying a little) together as they built this great land. Thanks again! - SteveJ

Hi Don,

I just wanted to say that I admire the effort you've put into your family tree. I'm from the New England branch of the Weston family. They were originally from England, and there's some vague family story that they came over with William the Conquerer... Affiliated with the name Parks, perhaps?

Happy research,

Claire Nava
