Previously thought to be the daughter of Nicholas West, this Joane West White has recently been shown to be his granddaughter.[1] Baptismal records show her to be daughter of Richard West. [2]
The older Joane West White was the sister of Richard West, making her this Joane's paternal aunt. The older Joane married Robert White.
For clarification, see this Pedigree Chart. The older Joan is on the left, near the top, and her niece is on the right, near the bottom.
Biography
From Metsch, The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, April 2008, p. 97:
"Richard and Magdaline/Maudlin (Staple alias Cooke) West were the parents of Joan West... bp. 1 April 1606; m. 28 May 1627 John White. John and Joan (West) White settled at Salem, Mass., in 1639, subsequently moving to Wenham and then Lancaster, Mass."
Joane was born in 1606. She passed away in 1654.
WFT Archives, vol. 8, states that John White, Sr, landed at Salem, Mass. in August 1639, in 1642, he moved his family to Wenham, Mass. and in 1653, to Lancaster, Mass. John was a carpenter by trade.
Savage, New England Register, states John White, Sr., came in 1638 to Salem, had a grant of land the next year. Removed with his family in 1643, was one of the first planters with his son, John, Jr., at Lancaster, Mass.
Colonial Families of the USA, 1607-1775, states that the first saw and grist mill in Wenham was built on John' s land. Joan, his wife was admitted to the first church in Salem on 26, Feb. 1642..., on May 1653, John became one of the first proprietors of the town of Lancaster.

I recently corresponded with Patricia Metsch, who has published the most recent work on this family. We do not have any evidence to link these Wests to the Lords de La Warre. This comment from Ms. Metsch (in an email from May, 2013):
"I have never seen any conclusive evidence to show who Nicholas West's parents were. There is record of an earlier John West with a wife Ann in Drayton, Somerset, who may very well be his father; and, the fact that Nicholas named three of his sons John might support such a possibility. But I know nothing further about John West. Perhaps if the Last Wills and Testaments from Somerset hadnt been destroyed in the bombing of Exeter, Devonshire, during WWII, we might have had the opportunity to know more."
The operative conclusion is that we don't know that John West of this family is connected to the aristocratic West family.
Almira Larkin White. Genealogy of the descendants of John White of Wenham and Lancaster, Massachusetts. 1638-1909. Volumes I & IV. Chase brothers, printers in Haverhill, Mass., 1900.
But I am aware of no compelling evidence from White making the connection.
I remembered that I put somethingm on my own web site from Arthur Collins, Peerage of England, 1779, that discusses the de la warre descendants in the line of Leonard. See the text, a son of Leonard West named John died very young, another son with the unlikely name Aholiab, lived but I see no link.
