Algernon was born in 1885. He was the son of whitesmith Joseph Wells and Ellen.
He was a keen amateur footballer, playing for Ware Town (winners of the Hertfordshire League 1910). He was also an athlete and competed in the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm.
Wells served in World War I with the Royal Artillery, winning the British War and Victory medals. His son Joseph saw service in Italy, Greece and Germany in World War II as a captain with the Royal Engineers.
He passed away in 1946. His beneficiary was a Phyllis Lily Wells, but whether this was a wife or daughter is unclear.
