Biography

Noah Webster was a farmer and deacon in West Hartford, Connecticut, and the father of famous lexicographer, Noah Webster, Jr., L.L.D.. Noah, son of Daniell Webster & Mirriam, was born on 25 March 1722 in Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut.[1]

Noah Webster was born on March 25, 1722 in Hartford, Connecticut as the son of Daniel Webster and Miriam Cook. He grew up in the region and made his living mostly as a farmer, though he was also deacon of the local Congregational Church, captain of the town's militia, and a founder of a local book society (a precursor to the public library). Noah, child of Daniell Webster, was baptised on 28 March 1722 in West Hartford, Connecticut, United States.[2]

Noah, child of Eliphalet Webster, married Mercy Steele on 12 January 1749 in West Hartford, Connecticut, United States.[3]

Webster married Mercy Steele on January 12, 1749. She died 5 Oct 1794. He then married Sarah Hopkins 12 Jun 1806 at West Hartford. She died 4 Jun 1819 age 78 years.

After his marriage in 1749 to Mercy, he built a house on the west side of South Main Street in West Hartford, a house that remains today as the Noah Webster house.

After American independence, he was appointed a justice of the peace.

Webster died on November 9, 1813 in Hartford, Connecticut, in the section later incorporated as West Hartford. His will was dated 9 November 1813. He left his estate to his wife Sarah, and children Henry Belden, Abram Webster, Noah Webster, Jerusha Lord and Charles Webster (named executor). The will was proved 29 Nov 1813.[4]
