On 27 Jun 1853, when he was 24 years old, John married Elizabeth Norsworthy in Brock, Durham County, Canada West.[1] The registry entry for her marriage indicated that she was a resident of Dorchester.
John and Elizabeth had 12 children of whom we have record:
Ida May Watts (b. 13 Sep 1880, West Garafraxa, Wellington, Ontario)[2]
John Watts was a missionary, as well as a farmer, moving his family frequently in the frontier areas of what became the Province of Ontario, Canada. The 1861 census found the family in Garafraxa Township, Wellington, Canada West; his occupation was recorded as “minister” in the Church of England.[3] Ten years later, he and Elizabeth had moved to St. Vincent, North Grey, Ontario, and he identified as a Methodist.[4]. In 1880, they were back in Garafraxa Township, where their daughter, Ida May, was born and where his occupation was listed as "farmer."[5] In 1891, they were in Artemesia, Grey South, Ontario.[6]
At the time of his death at the age of 82 from arteriosclerosis and a resultant stroke ("apoplexy") on 12 Nov 1910, John and Elizabeth were settled in Walkerton, Bruce County, Ontario.[7] He was buried in Walkerton Cemetery, Walkerton, Bruce County, Ontario.[8]
