Edward was born March 16, 1888 in Chatham, New Brunswick. He was a son of Alexander Watling and Catherine (Kelly) Watling.[1]
"He served in the 73rd Regiment of the Canadian Militia before enlisting during WWI. He first went overseas with the 26th Battalion where he advanced to the rank of Corporal. He was then brought on strength as a Lieutenant in the newly formed 145th Battalion at Moncton on Sept 5, 1916, only 20 days before the Battalion set sail for France aboard the S.S. Tuscania on September 25.
During his second tour, he was twice awarded the Military Cross and Bar.
Prior to his discharge, he was promoted to the rank of Major."
He returned to Chatham at the end of War.
After the war, was engaged in the grocery business in Chatham initially employed by J.B. Snowball. He and a partner, Earl Malley, bought the business in 1923 and confucted it under the name Watling & Malley.
Watling sat for four years on Chatham Town Council and was elected Mayor in 1929.
Edward was a star athlete, competing in hockey, track and field, baseball, basketball, rugby and boxing. He was a member of the 1910 Chatham Stars baseball team that captured the NB Championship. He played on three championship hockey teams. He was named top all-round athlete at a Maritime track meet in 1909.[2]
In 1985, he was posthumously inducted into the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame.[2]
"Edward married Nellie D. Gunning and had at least 3 sons and 3 daughters by that marriage. One his sons, Lloyd A. Watling, was an officer in the Canadian Army, served in WWII, and was also decorated with the Military Cross. " He passed away in Moncton on September 14, 1929 after contracting a Meningitis infection following a surgery at the age of 41. He was interred in Chatham at the Riverside Cemetery.[1][3]
