James Bennett Washam is the son of Thomas Washam and Sarah Rodgers of northern Mecklenburg Co., NC. He was baptised at Bethel Presbyterian Church, Cornelius, NC on 8 Oct 1834.[1]
He married Malinda Day of Iredell Co., NC on 24 May 1860 and the couple had two children.
James enlisted in the Confederate army in Co. D, 7th Reg NC State (Infantry) troops, as a private at age 27 on 18 Aug, 1862. During the time J. B. Washam was with the unit they fought at Second Manassas (28-30 Aug 1862), the Chantilly (1 Sep 1862), and Harper's Ferry (12-15 Sep 1862) and Antietam (17 Sep 1862), Shepherdstown (19-20 Sep 1862), Fredericksburg (11-15 Dec 1862) and Chancellorsville (30 Apr- 6 May 1863). He was admitted to Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond, VA 20 Jun 1863 with dysentry & died 15 Aug 1863.
