Biography

James Warren (1665 to 1715) married Sarah Doty on June 21, 1687. The couple were life long residents of Plymouth, Massachusetts. ten children were born to the marriage, three sons and seven daughters. Only one son and four daughters survived the parents.

Probate

His will is dated 28 January 1711/12 and proved on 23 June 1715 in Plymouth. He mentions his wife, Sarah, his only son James, and his daughter, Sarah is the only daughter mentioned by name but he had others. His moveable inventory was taken on 20 July 1715 in Plymouth. He was a slaveholder and at the time of his death, four enslaved persons were included in his inventory, all not named, viz., a black woman, a black man, an English servant, and two Indian servants.[1]

In 1773, the Plymouth probate court was asked to divide the "13th great lot of cedar- swamp lying in Plympton" that Capt James Warren had purchased, which after he died was passed on to his son James Warren, Esqr, decd, and his seven daughters, viz., Sarah, Alice, Patience, hope, Mercy, Mary, and Elizabeth. James Warren, Esqr. afterward purchased his sister Mary's part. Three daughters (Hope, Mercy, and Betty) died intestate, whereupon their brother James Warren, Esqr., became also possessed of his proportion of their shares. So the land was divided between the surviving children or their heirs, viz., the heirs of James Warren, Esqr. (James Warren Esqr., of Plymouth, and Sarah, wife of William Sever, Esqr of Kingston {Note: Sarah and her husband William were first cousins, and heirs to Capt James Warren.}, to the heirs of Alice Ford, decd., the heirs of Sarah Sever, decd. (the heirs of Bethiah Tyler, decd.).[2]
