Vincent Paul Warren, once the principal dancer of Les Grands Ballets Candaiens, mentored a generation of dancers and shared his historical collection of dance memorablia with the world. Known as the Rudoph Nureyev of Montreal, Warren was the recipient of the Prix Denise-Pelletier medal and a member of the Order of Canada (CM).
Vincent Warren was born in Florida. At the age of one, Vincent Warren and his twin brother, Dennis, were living with their parents, Francis J. and Agnes S. Warren, in Jacksonville, Duval, Florida in 1940. They had, at that point in time, seven siblings, ranging in age from 16 to four. Francis Warren was Justice of the Peace in the county, working 54 hours per week, while Agnes ran the household.[1] Vincent grew up in Jacksonville, and attended Bishop Kenny High School. [2][3]
Warren had started dancing at age 11, inspired by the film "Red Shoes". Dancing led him to New York after graduation to study at the American Ballet Theatre. He danced with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet where his dancing skill coupled with his attractive physical appearance made him very popular. He left New York for a lucrative offer with Les Grand Ballets in Montreal in 1961, where he enjoyed a long career. [4] Warren reportedly became a Canadian citizen in 1973.
Warren retired from and Les Grands Ballets Canadiens in 1979. His last performance was in a farewell ballet written for him entitled "For Vincent Warren, Adieu Robert Schumann".[5] After his retirement from performing, he turned to teaching and coaching dance, working with students and professionals alike. He opened his home to dance students in need of housing. [6]which Warren said would be useful as he contemplated his next role in life. His comment to a reporter: "Basically, I'm looking for work".[6] He was also honored with the Order of Canada in 2004, and the Ordre des arts et des lettres du Québec in 2017.
Warren's legacy also includes his library of dance memorabilia, which is housed in the l'École supérieure de ballet du Québec as the Bibliothèque de la danse Vincent-Warren. Warren died of cancer in 2017 at the age of 79. [4]
