Biography

Uncertain Origins

The surname Warren, Warrin, Warin, Warryn, Waryn was quite common In England. Of course, the forename John was and still is even more common. There were men named John Warren in different English counties at the time, just as there were different families with that same surname both in England and in the New World. This John Warren was not related to Richard Warren of the Mayflower. Nor was he the son of Christopher Warren and Alyce Webbe.

The John Warren who seems to have arrived with the Winthrop Fleet, initially does not seem to present any indication of his origins. His surname was on a provisional list, no first name, no name for his wife and children either.[1] It is generally assumed that he was the man listed just as it is assumed that he came with his wife and children.

Bond included him in his inventory of Watertown settlers, commenting mostly on his will.[2] Savage seems to have been the first one to connect him with the Winthrop Fleet, more specifially to Richard Saltonstall.[3] Neither author mentioned his origins. The connection with the Warren family in Nayland, Stoke by Nayland and Wissington, Suffolk, England, seems to have been made in the early 1900s by the Committee on English Research of the New England Historical and Genealogical Society.[4] According to a 1907 article, they tried to make transcriptions of every will they could find for families with surnames similar to those of New England settlers before 1700. In some cases they also made transcriptions of parish records.[5]An enourmous endeavor which, in itself, presents a myriad of problems from its conception. In the case of John Warren, there were people by that name born in the 1580s and 1590s in Devon, Leicestershire, Derbyshire, Gloucestershire and Middlesex, just to name a few English counties.[6][7][8][9] There were even people by that same name born in other Suffolk villages.[10] How they came to choose this origin for the John Warren who immigrated to New England is unclear. His date of birth and those of his children who were baptized in Nayland, Suffolk, England, fit nicely with what we know about his life in Watertown, Massachusetts Bay Colony. Nevertheless, it seems important to point out that these dates, places and events in England, although well documented by parish records and wills, are plausible, but far from certain as they could pertain to another individual by the same name.

Baptism

John Warrin was baptized on 1 August 1585, at the parish of Nayland, county Suffolk, England. He was a son of John Warren and Elizabeth Scarlett. This baptism date and place, as well as his parents' names, are supported by transcriptions made by Elizabeth French for the Committee on English Research for the New England Historical and Genealogical Society and was published in 1910 in their Register.[4] Anderson mentions that same transcription for Warren's biography but seems to have compared it to the original records.[11]

Life in England

John's father was called a cardmaker in a few parish records, which means he made tools for carding wool.[4] No indication of John's occupation could be found to present in any of the primary sources available.

In the 1629 Visitation of Nayland, Archdeaconry of Sudbury, Diocese of Norwich, John Warren was the first in a list of seven men from that parish who were prosecuted "for not kneeling at the communion", a common Puritan offense. He was fined 90 pounds.[11]

Marriage

John married a woman named Margaret still in England and probably before 1615 when his first child seems to have been baptized.[4] Margaret's maiden name has been disputed and several possibilities have been suggested, although most of them are unsupported by primary sources. The most plausible match seems to be Margaret Abbott, who was baptized in 1589 at St Barnabas church in Chappel, Essex, England, 10 miles southwest of Nayland, Suffolk, England.[12] Margret Abbott married a John Warren in 1612 also at St, Barnabas church in Chappel, Essex, England[13] Margaret passed away in Nov 1662, Watertown, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay Colony. [14]

Children

John and Margaret had at least 7 children:

  1. Marie, bap. 23 Apr 1615, Nayland, Suffolk, England, bur. 17 Dec 1622, Nayland, Suffolk, England.[4]
  2. Elizabeth bap. 25 Jun 1619, Nayland, Suffolk, England, bur. 25 NOv 1622, Nayland, Suffolk, England.[4]
  3. Sarah baptised 20 Apr 1620, Nayland, Suffolk, England, bur. 7 Sep 1621, Nayland, Suffolk, England.[4]
  4. John baptised 12 May 1622, Nayland, Suffolk, England,[15] married Michal Jennison alias Bloyss, 11 Jul 1667, Watertown, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay Colony,[16] d. 27 Jan 1703, Watertown, Middlesex, Massacusetts Bay Colony.[17]
  5. Mary bap. 12 Sep 1624, Nayland, Suffolk, England,[4] m. John Bigelow 30 Oct 1642, Wtertown,Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay Colony,[18] died 19 Oct 1691, Watertown, Massachusetts Bay Colony.[19]
  6. Daniel baptised 25 Feb 1626/7, Nayland, Suffolk, England,[20] m. Mary Barron, 10 Dec 1650, Watertown, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay Colony,[21] d. after 1698.
  7. Elizabeth bap. 2 July 1629, Nayland, Suffolk, England,[22] m. James Knapp alias Knopp prob. bef. 1655,[23] d. 12 Jan 1715/6, Watertown, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay Colony.[24]

Threlfall also mentions Susan, who would have been baptized on 14 April 1612 in Nayland, Suffolk, England. Although not clear, it would seem that he credits the information to Bond's Genealogies of the families and descendants of the early settlers of Watertown, Massachusetts. Bond, however, never mentioned Susan.[25] (primary source research reveals that the Nayland parish register says Susan Wrinch was baptized on that day, daughter of John. Robert, another child of John Wrinch, was baptized in 1608. Findmypast.co.uk) Since Threlfall's essay contains a few mistakes and very few citations to support his claims and also no trusted sources could be found so far to demonstrate Susan's existence, she will not be included here as one of John and Margaret's children. The list proposed by Anderson seems to be more consistent with the primary soruces and trusted secondary sources found to date.[11]

Immigration

In 1630, John and Margaret were among those who joined the exodus to America. They seem to have come to New England from Nayland, Suffolk, England, with the Winthrop fleet. The fleet arrived in New England between June and July 1630.[26] Despite claims on several genealogies on the internet that John Warren traveled with Governor Winthrop aboard the "Arabella", no documentation has been found to support that. Furthermore, it has not been possible to identify the name of the ship which carried John and his family to New England.[1]

Despite the absence of primary sources listing his wife and children among those who came with the Winthrop Fleet, his wife Margaret and their children John, Mary, Daniel and Elizabeth appear in several colonial records and would have probably arrived with John.

Colonial Life

The family settled in Watertown, where John was made freeman 18 May 1631, chosen selectman in 1635 and again in 1639.[11] On 14 November 1635 John Warrin and Abram Browne were tasked with laying the highways and making sure they were sufficiently maintained. On September 30 of that same year, John was also listed as part of a group of 11 freemen to "order" the civil affairs of the town for the next year and divide the lands.[27] In July 1636 John received a grant of 60 acres of land.[28] Then he received 13 more acres in February 1636/7 as part of the grant of plow lands at Beverbroke Planes.[29] The first Inventory of Lands and Possessions for Watertown dated 1634/5 shows a complete list of John's properties: a homestall of 12 acres, 9 acres of upland, 3 acres of meadow, 13 acres of plowland, 13 acres of meadow, 16.5 acres of upland, 60 acres of upland, a farm of 160 acres of upland, in total 286.5 acres.[30] The Second Inventory dated 1641-2 listed under his name: a homestall of 12 acres, 9 acres of upland, 3 acres of meadow, 13 acres of plowland, 13 acres of meadow, 16.5 acres of upland, 60 acres of upland, 1.5 acres of meadow, 1.5 acres of meadow, 2 acres of marsh, in a total of 131.5 acres, less than half of the acreage he had in the first inventory.[31]

In 1639 John was chosen again to be part of a group of 12 freemen to "order" the civil affairs of the town.[32] He was also mentioned twice in 1647 concerning disputes about distribution of land.[33]

Despite his early engagement in the town's affairs from the 1650s onwards several incidents could reveal that John was not conforming to the requirements of puritan life. He did belong to the church, but was fined for frequent absences from services.[11] Bond speculates that John Warren may have been a Baptist.[2]

John was cited for failing to attend public worship and he may have sympathized with the Quakers.[34]

  • In October 1651, he and Thomas Arnold, were each fined 20 shillings for an offence against the laws concerning baptism.
  • On 4 Apr 1654, he was fined, for neglect of public worship, 14 Sabbaths, each 5 shillings = 3 pounds, 10 shillings.
  • On 14 Mar 1658/59, he was to be warned for not attending public worship; but "old Warren is to be found in town".
  • On 27 May 1661, the houses of "old Warren and goodman Hammond", were ordered to be searched for Quakers.[2]

According to Bond, he appeared to have agreed in religious sentiments with Dr. John Clark, of Newport, Nathaniel Briscoe, Sr., who returned from Watertown to England and Thomas Arnold, who moved from Watertown to Providence, Rhode Island.[2]

Despite his lack of conviction for the established church, John never gave up or lost his church membership. He may have kept his membership to avoid losing some privileges such as voting.[35][2]

Death and Probate

John died on 13 Dec 1667, at Watertown, Massachusetts Bay Colony. He was 82 years old.[16][36]

For a transcription of John Warren's Last Will and Testament please check: Last Will and Testament of John Warren of Watertown, 1667

John left land to his children, specific objects, such as pewter utensils, to his children, daughters-in-law and grandchildren and the book The Plain Man's Pathway to Heaven, by Arthur Dent to his daughter Elizabeth.[37] The well know puritan book was first published in 1601 and its presence is particularly interesting due to Warren's apparent lack of compliance with puritan laws and customs.

Shouldn't Bayle-129 be disconnected as wife to John Warren? Does anyone have any trusted sources to support that? I haven't been able to find any evidence that Bayly was the wife of John Warren, the immigrant.
Yes, Bayly is incorrect for this John Warren.

I need to go look at some details to find the correct pair who did marry. Lots of research went into it

I found a marriage record for a John Warren and a Margret Abbott in Essex, 10 miles from Nayland. I thought that looked promissing. I saved those records to Unknown-298071. I'd love to see what you found in your quest. It seems there's an article about that Margaret Abbott in the last TAG issue. I'll need to go to the FHC to read that though.
Warren-8149 and Warren-238 appear to represent the same person because: They are the same person (see Leslie Mahler's article in the most recent TAG).

Late in life he fell under the censure of the laws, unwisely levelled at dissenting from the religious course of the major part of the inhabitants and Bond informs us of proceedings against him in 1651, 1654, and 1661; but he died in peace, 13 December 1667, aged 82. His wife Margaret died 6 November 1662. She was probably the mother of all his children John, born 1622; Mary; and Daniel, born 1628; beside Elizabeth who married about 1654, James Knapp. Mary married 30 Oct. 1642, John Bigelow. I would love to see any evidence you could provide other than U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900 and internet family trees. Neither are considered trusted sources. I'm currently working on Elizabeth Warren's profile for the PGM project and so far I haven't been able to find any sources with Margaret's maiden name or of Margaret's marriage to John Warren. We know from their children's baptism records that her first name was Margaret. Any primary sources that could help solve this mystery would be very much welcome.
Why are Bailey-10743 and Unknown-298071 both carried as spouse of Warren-238 ?

The reasons why Bailey-10743 is not accepted as spouse of Warren-238 are covered in Unknown-298071.
