William Warn aged 53 labourer, a heavy drinker of colonial wine, hanged himself at Glen Osmond in January 1904 aged 53. He used to sleep at an untenanted house near the quarries and had complained to Constable Murphy that he had worn out two or three pairs of boots in an unsuccessful search for work, and was a swagman and sleeping in an untenanted house near the quarries. He was of a lively disposition but had been fidgety of late. [Adelaide Observer, 30 Jan 1904] The house was built when the quarry was making its record output, but had recently been occupied only by swagmen who have camped in it. Charles Gross, a plasterer, of Lower Mitcham, said he last saw the deceased alive about a fortnight ago. He seemed melancholy, and had been out of work for sometime. He drank a considerable quantity of colonial wine. The coroner made condemnatory remarks concerning the sale of cheap so-called “colonial wine”. [The Advertiser, 25 Jan 1904]
