Biography

In February 1865 Charles Walker was convicted for stealing from a dray along with John Kelly and John Chapman. The dray was travelling between Chiltern and Beechworth, Victoria. John Chapman and Charles Walker were sentenced to five years and John Kelly was sentenced to four years on the roads; the lesser charge for Kelly because he pleaded guilty.[1]

Charles Walker was a 20-year-old American black man. He was literate; his trade was tinsmith; he had been a sailor; and he had no relatives in Victoria. He was transferred from Beechworth gaol to Pentridge Prison in Melbourne, where he was discharged in 1868.[2]
