Biography

John Walker was born to Peter and Mary Walker of Woolley Moor in the parish of North Wingfield, Derbyshire in 1724. He was baptised at North Wingfield on 24 June 1724.^[1]

John Walker and Mary Cheatham married on 29 July 1750 at Saint Michael, Derby, Derbyshire. ^[2][3] The marriage records show that at the time he was a farmer living at Ford in the parish of North Wingfield, aged 26, and she was a spinster from Brackenfield in the adjacent parish of Morton, aged 22.

The couple settled first at Brimington near Chesterfield. They had several children.

John's wife Mary presumably died at some time in the early 1760s. He did not marry again but had several children with his "housekeeper" Mary Johnson nee Heywood, which are acknowledged in his will.

By the time of his death in 1790 he was living at Summerly in the parish of Dronfield. He was buried at Dronfield on 19 November.^[4]

John left a will dated 2 November 1790, with a codicil dated 10th of November and proved at Lichfield on the 30th. ^[5] It contains bequests to

• son Peter Walker. £100 but "to be paid to him only when he arrives in Derbyshire and he to receive it himself and not to be paid to any other person on his account"
