James Calloway "Bud" Waid

This story was sent to my Aunt June (Shirley June Waid Southall) from L.P. Waid

James "Bud" Calloway Waid b. 18 May 1847 in Blount Co., Alabama d. 22 Jun 1920 in Marshall Co., Alabama.

James C Waid (my grandfather) was about twelve years of age when his father died, although his grandfather Thompson and Uncle Terrell Thompson took the family under their wings, James as the oldest of six children had a lot of responsibility for his age. The Civil War began about the time of his fourtheen birthday and ended about the time of his eighteen birthday. Then came the hard constructions years with the chaos and poverty that went with them. It was a rough time to grow up, and his formal education was meager. Somehow James C Waid acquired the nickname "bud" and it was by that name that he was commonly known. I suppose he lived all of his life in Blount Co., until about the time of his marriage. I know he lived in the Whitney area of Saint Clair County for a time, and his mother re-married there in Nov. 1872.

A post office was established at Whitney, AL and James C Waid was the first post-master. He was appointed 22 Mar 1875 and his successor was appointed 5 Jul 1878. He must have returned to the Straight Mountain area of Blount County as soon as he left the Whitney post office. I heard Victor Waid (my uncle) talk of his boyhood on several occasions, but it always started on Straight Mountain. I have in my possession Bud Waid's old family Bible. Between the Old and New Testaments are four frayed and stained pages. all headed "Family Record" Page 1 is for marriages and contains this entry: James C Waid and Ellen S Glover was married 24 May 1871 Page 2 is for births and contains these 11 May 1878 (nothing to explain this date), James C Waid was born the 18 May 1847, Ellen S Glover was born the 14 May 1852, Victor Waid born 28 June 1872, James Carter Waid born 11 Dec 1873, Eli Waid born 1 Oct. 1875, little daughter born 18 Jun 1877 not named lived but 4 days, Charles Waid born 24 Aug 1878, Adar Elizabeth Waid born 16 Aug 1880, Page 3 is also for births and contains these entries:

Bud Waid donated the land for Mountain Chapel Methodist Church. My father (Luther) told me that the house in which he was born stood about 100 yards from the church site. About 1889 Bud Waid moved to Beat 28, near the county line. Although he lived in Blount County, the nearest towns were Walnut Grove and Altoona just across in Etowah County, Alabama.

The grave of Hampton Waid , Rev. War Soldier, was on the adjoining farm, in the direction of Oneonta. Nettie Waid Robbins (my aunt) said her father bought the estate of his uncle John Thompson, consisting 160 acres. I have made no effort to search the records, but I assume this is where he moved in 1889. Later he purchased a forty acre tract adjoining it. There was a big spring on that forty acres and Nettie said her father told her he was born near the spring.

He built a new house certainly a fine house for the time and place but had been in it only about 2 months when Ellen Glover Waid suddenly passed on 20 Feb 1892 (this house was torn down in the late 1980). A picture indicates she was a beautiful woman, her daughter Nettie said she had light brown hair and clear blue eyes. My father said she was a very religious woman and at some testimonial meeting of some kind recited over 500 verses of scripture from memory. For some reason her death is not recorded in the family Bible. She is buried at Walnut Grove.

Later in 1892, Bud Waid sought and won the Democratic nomination for County Commissioner in District 3, beating two opponents without a run-off. In the general election that November the Republicans and Populists combined their forces and a Republican named Amos Fowler beat him. (The county governing body, then and now, consist of a Probate Judge, as chairman, elected county-wide, and four commissioners elected by districts. I am acquainted with one of Fowler's grandsons.)

At that time Bud's address was given as Balm, Alabama. That was before rural free delivery of mail, and there were many small post offices, some-times in a store or dwelling house, and people from the area would call for their mail. I have never heard of any place or community in Blount County referred to as "Balm".

In the family Bible, on page 1 of the family record, is pasted a newspaper clipping which reads as follows:

"Married: At the residence of bride's parents, near Snead, Ala., on Sunday Mar 19 1893, by the Rev. Martin Armstrong, Mr. James C. Waid, of Balm, to Miss Beththena E. Daily. We extend congratulations to the happy couple."

On page 3 of the family record appears the following entries:

(these are children of J.C. and Beththena Daily Waid)

Martin Otis Waid born 29 Jul 1894

Girdie Waid born 2 Jun 1896

Essie Waid born 23 Oct 1897

Ellie Waid born 1 Jun 1902

Onnis Waid born 22 Oct 1906

Page 4 of the family record in the old Bible are these entries:

James C. Waid died 22 Jun 1920

Bettie (as she was commonly called), was the dau of Neely Daily and was born 25 Apr 1870. As I understand it, the Daily family lived in Blount County only a short time, and moved on to Texas.

Emma Nancy Daily Jennings, who married James Pinckney Thompson, 1st cousin to Bud Waid, was the widowed sister of Betty Daily.

Some time after 1900 Bud Waid moved to Altoona, which at the time was a booming coal mining town. He went into the general mercantile business with a Jew named Rosenbloom. Bud's sons Tobe and Luther were also associated with the business. I understood Luther (my father) to say one time that they were in business from 1908 to 1913, but years later I helped Onnis obtain a birth certificate, it seems that he was born in Altoona, and he was born in 1906.

In the fall of 1913 he moved to a farm near Boaz, Marshall County, Alabama. His son Luther moved at the same time to the adjoining farm. They had a common pasture for their live-stock.

James C. Waid was a Methodist, a Democrat, and for several years was active in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. [L.P. Waid]

He married (1) Ellener Susan Glover, married 24 May 1871 in At her father's home, Blount Co., Al., b. 14 May 1852 in Blount Co., Al., (daughter of Eli Glover and Elizabeth Steele) d. 20 Feb 1892 near Walnut Grove, Etowah Co., Al., buried Walnut Grove Cem in Walnut Grove, Etowah Co., Al. Ellener: Ellener and Bud donated land for the Mountain Chapel Methodist Church. The deed is dated 12 Sep 1887, according to a Mr. Blakey, who is writing a history of the church.[Waid Bk]

He married (2) Beththena "Bettie" E. Daily, married 19 Mar 1893 in near Snead, Etowah Co., Al., b. 25 Apr 1870, d. 18 Oct 1943 in Marshall Co., Al., buried Walnut Grove Cem in Walnut Grove, Etowah Co., Al. Beththena: Daughter of Neely & Rebecca Caroline Ellis Daily. Bud and Bettie married by the Rev Martin Armstrong.[Waid Bk]

(this is continued from James "Bud" C. Waid)

Some years later I over-heard a conversation between Bettie (Bud's widow), Luther (my father) and Otis (my uncle). Otis asked what was his father's middle name. Bettie replied she thought it was Calvin. Luther disagreed but I don't recall what else he said. By this time I was lost in amazement that no one had thought to find out while he lived. I do recall that four names were discussed as possibilities. They were Calloway, Calvin, Carter and Chester.

In 1948 when I asked Abram Waid about his relationship to Bud Waid, and he replied that they were first cousins, he also said of Bud that he was called Calloway when he was a boy. I instantly recalled that was one of the names that had been mentioned in that conversation 20 or 25 years earlier.

Bettie Waid seemed to me like my real grand-mother, although I was conscious of the fact that she was not and my father called her "Mrs. Waid". She was a good woman and gave me a Bible when I was somewhere from 12 to 15 years of age. She continued to live on the homestead near Boaz through 1935, and then lived with her daughter Minnie for a couple of years. She then returned to the family homestead. She died 18 Oct 1943, but her death is not recorded in the family Bible. She rest at Walnut Grove, between Girdie and her husband, and he rest between the two fine women with whom he shared life.[Waid Bk/L.P.Waid] [1]
