Ken was born, the second son of Grace and Jack Voorhees, on December 9, 1923, in Sioux City, Iowa.[1]. He spent his first six years in Sloan, Iowa. [2] The family then moved to California where both of his parents practiced law.[3]
Ken graduated from Dorsey High School in 1940.
During WWII he joined the Coast Guard and was stationed in Southern California. During his time on the mainland he met Martha Henry at the USO where she entertained playing piano. They married in March 1944 [4] and shortly thereafter he was shipped to the Marshall Islands in the South Pacific. After his Pacific assignment and transfer back to the mainland, he was sent to Officer's Training School in Connecticutt. The war ended while he was there and he and Marty returned to California.
Ken went to the University of Southern California and became an accountant. After practicing in the Los Angeles area for about 15 years he moved the family to Chico, California. During his time in Chico (1963 - 1988) he practiced accounting, taught at California State University, Chico and Butte Community College. He taught for one year at Three Rivers College in Lismore, NSW, Australia.
Ken and Marty spent their retirement years traveling with no home base for seven years, eventually they settled in Apache Junction, Arizona and finally in Paradise, California. They passed away within 48 hours of each other and were honored in a joint funeral. [5]
