Richard was born in 1810, the son of John Venville and Mary Beacham. He was baptised on the 11 March 1810 at Great Rissington, Gloucester, England.[1]
Richard was convicted in the Gloucester Quarter Session of "Machine Breaking" in 1831. He had participated in the Swing Riots in Gloucestershire in 1830. The Swing Riots were a widespread uprising in 1830 by agricultural workers in southern and eastern England, in protest of agricultural mechanisation and other harsh conditions.[2]
He was transported (recorded as Richard Venwell) from Gloucestershire on the 4 January 1831, and aboard the Eliza, arrived in Van Diemen's Land on the 28 May 1831. Richard received a free pardon (number 360) on the 3 February 1836.[3][4] The Description List gives his age as 22.[5]
A machine breaker who was "passed on" by one master to another for the Port Phillip adventure was the Gloucestershire ploughman Richard Venwell. He had worked out his period of assignment on the northern property of James Grant and when he received his freedom he went to work for John Wallace, who was Grant's nephew. In 1836, he accompanied Wallace across Bass Strait to manage `Ballark', a large sheep run that Wallace had acquired. [6]
In 1840, Richard Venfield (recorded as Richard Venvall) married Eliza Brown in the Port Phillip District, Colony of New South Wales.[7]
He (recorded as Richard Venville) passed away in 1896, recorded age 90. [8]
His descendants in Australia have the surname Venville.
