Baptism 22 Nov 1847 in Gippsland, by the Rev. Edward Gifford Pryce on one of his travelling ministries; father, a labourer at Taraville. John's younger sister, Esther, was baptised on the same day.

Marriage In 1872, John married Francis "Fanny" Park. ^[4]

John and Fanny celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary on Saturday 24 September 1932. News Article: "Mr and Mrs John Varney, of Loch Street Coburg, celebrated their diamond wedding on Saturday. Mr Varney, who is 86 years of age, is one of the earliest living pioneers of Gippsland. He was born on the Tanjil in North Gippsland, but spent most of his life in Foster. Mr Varney's grandmother came to Australia with the original settlers as nursemaid to Governor Phillip's children." ^[5]

Death Vic BDM #4582/1935 at Coburg, aged 89; mother recorded as Clara CHARD; CHARD was the married name of Harriett SAUNDERSON, half-sister to John's mother Clara McGOWAN/SAUNDERS/VARNEY.

Burial 11 Jun 1935, Fawkner Memorial Park.
