Son of Isaac Pierson Vanwinkle and Mary Ann Frame.

The name Rolla has been used as a given name in the Frame family.

In 1870 John was aged 17, living with his parents in Kingston, Caldwell, Missouri.^[1]

John had a daughter, Maud, about 1877. She is living with his parents in 1880. 1880 Census, Kingston, Caldwell, Missouri: Isaac Vanwinkle age 53 b OH; Mary Vanwinkle age 50 b OH; Mary Vanwinkle dau age 23 b OH; Clara Vanwinkle dau age 22 b OH; Alice Vanwinkle dau age 20 b OH; Maud Vanwinkle granddaughter age 3 b MO. ^[2]

In 1880 J. R. Vanwinkle was living in Blaylock, Umatilla, Oregon and employed as a laborer. listed as single, b Ohio in 1851. Living with J. B. Kesterson, b. Missouri, age 20. ^[3]

Married unknown Hillegoss about 1885. By her he had Harry Waldo Vanwinkle b 7 Sep 1886 in Washington.

In 1900 John R. Van Winkle, white male, widowed, b Aug 1855 in Ohio, was living with his son Harry W. Van WInkle, age 14, born in Washington. John was employed as a carpenter. Harry's father was born in Ohio and his mother in California. Her birth surname was Hillegoss.^[4]

In 1910 (no first name) Van Winkle was living with a family of Kestersons in Grants Pass, Oregon. He was aged 60, divorced, born in Ohio, and the head of household was George H. Kesterson, age 45, b. in California.^[5]
