Elisabeth de Lint (family name also rendered as van der Linde, van der Linden, and de Lendt) was a daughter of Esaias Ewoutsz de Lint and his wife Mayken Dammes (also rendered as Adams or Dame) Vissenburg. She was baptized as "Lijsbetje" at the Old Church in Amsterdam, Holland, on Thursday, 13 December 1629.[1][2] Her parents were recorded as "Josias Vanderlinde" and "Maijke Davidts" and the witness was Doreitea Huibrechtsdr. Cooney and Macy say her "mother's patronymic was almost certainly misunderstood," and note that the name of her son Esaias appeared (probably erroneously) as Josias in an Albany, New York, deed in 1686.[3]
Baptisms of three other siblings were recorded in Amsterdam. Elisabeth's father and these three other children were no longer living as of 1641, when Elisabeth emigrated to New Netherland with her mother and stepfather, Jan Verbeek.[3] A notarial paper before Notary J. v. d. Ven at Amsterdam, Netherlands, dated 1641, 11 July, stated that Jan Verbeek from Breda, 27 years old, a tailor, and Mayken Dammes (Adams) Vissenburg, his wife, 42 years old, and her daughter by a previous marriage ("voordochter"), Lysbeth van der Linden, 11 years old, made a contract to go to the Colony of Rensselaerswyck.[4] [5] The van Rensselaer Bowier manuscripts indicate that Jan Verbeek, his wife, a child, and a maidservant were passengers on de Coninck David, sailing from Amsterdam on 23 July 1641 and arriving at New Amsterdam on 29 November 1641. The family likely spent the winter on Manhattan Island before traveling up the river to Rensselaerswyck, where Jan Verbeek was first recorded in 1642.[3]
Elisabeth de Lint married three times. Her first husband was Teunis Cornelissen Swart, who she probably married about 1749-1750, probably in Beverwyck (now Albany) or Rensselaerswyck. Eight children (Jacomyntje, Cornelis, Marytje, Esaias, Pieternella, Adam, Neelje, and Jannetje; birth order uncertain) are recorded from their marriage, born between 1650 and 1675. Leysebeth and Teunis Cornelisse Swart made a joint will at Schenectady, New York, in 21 July 1677.[6]
Her second husband was Jacob Meese Vrooman. They probably were married by 7 February 1682/3, when the lot of Teunis Cornelisse Swart was conveyed to Jacob Meese Vrooman, by the Magistrates of Schenectady. "Appeared before me, Robert Livingston, secretary of Albany, colony of Rensselaerswyck, etc., in presence of the Honorable Mr. Dirk Wessells and Mr. Johannes Provoost, magistrates of the same jurisdiction, Leysebeth De Lendt, widow of the late Cornelise Teunis Swart, who declared herself to be honestly and truly indebted and in arrears to the honorable diaconate of the Reformed Church here in this town in the sum of four hundred and fifty-four guilders, seawan for money loaned and to her content received, which sum of 454 guilder. seawan she promises to pay to the said diaconate at the first opportunity, whereto she specially binds her land lying at Shinnechady, being lot No. 10 between Symon d'Backer and Jan van Eps and generally her person and estate, real and personal, present and future, nothing excepted, submitting the same to the authority of all lords, courts, tribunals and judges. Done in Albany on the 3d of January 1680/1."[7][8] Elisabeth was identified as the wife of Jacobus Meese Vrooman in 1686, when she conveyed land to her son Esaisas, who is mistakenly called Josias in the deed record.[9] Jacob Meesz Vrooman died before 14 October 1691, when Elisabeth married for the third time. There were no children from this second marriage or from the third marriage that followed.[3]
Elizabeth de Lint, widow of Jacob Meesz Vrooman, married Wouter Albertsz van den Uythof, widower, in Albany, New York, on 14 October 1691.[10][11] She made a deed at Albany in 1692 with third husband Wouter Uythoff. This deed, which also refers to her two previous marriages and sons Cornelis and Esaisas Swart, calls her "Elysabeth van der Linde," but she signed it "Elisabeth de Lendt."[12] She may have living in 1697 when Wouter and a woman (presumably his wife) were recorded in the Albany census.[13] However, his name appears without hers in church records as sponsor for two baptisms of her grandchildren in years before 1697. The first such record is dated 12 December 1691 (before the 1692 deed), when Wouter Van den Uythof and Mari Van Dam sponsored the baptism of Sara, child of Esias Teunisz Swart (her son) and Eva Teunisz. On 12 February 1693 Wouter V. Uythoff and Jannetje Swart (her daughter) witnessed the baptism of Ariaantje, child of Claas Laurentsz and Marietje Swart (her daughter).[14]
Elizabeth's first name has been spelled in a variety of ways, including Leysebeth, Elisabeth, Lysbet, Elysabeth, and Lijsbetje. The improbable spelling of Lisjsbetje also has been reported, based on a transcription of her baptism record. For her last name, she consistently used her last name at birth, which is variously rendered. Spellings seen include de Lint, de Lendt, van der Linde, van der Linden, and Vanderlinde. Cooney and Macy commented: "When an apparently Dutch person appears in the New York records of this period always using a surname, and no patronymic, one may suspect that they were actually German, but this was not the case with Elisabeth, and the fact that she so persistently used her maiden surname probably reflects the importance she (and perhaps others) attached to her family connections." Some genealogies call her by the last name of one of her husbands; this probably is a mistake.
