Biography

This profile is for the wife of Mayflower passenger James Chilton. She accompanied him on the Mayflower on the voyage of 1620 to Plymouth. Her identification is disputed. She probably married James Chilton about 1584-1587 in Canterbury, Kent, England.

Some genealogists in the 1960's thought (erroneously) that she was Susanna Furner who was born about 1564 and christened at St. Paul, Canterbury, Kent, England. Some genealogists believed that Susanna's widowed mother married Lionel Chilton, who was the father of her probable future husband, James Chilton.[1].

"The alleged marriage of James Chilton to Susanna Furner has been reproduced many times in genealogies since 1962. Susannah Furner's baptism was recently discovered in the parish register of St. Paul's church, Canterbury. It reads as follows: "Susan Furner the 5th daye" November, 1573. The Chilton's first child, Isabell, was baptised on January 15th 1586. This would mean that her alleged mother, Susanna, would have been only 12-1/2 years old when she married James Chilton who was then about 29 years old. She would have been only 13 when she gave birth to Isabell. This is highly unlikely. Since there is no record of James Chilton's marriage, until new evidence is found, Mrs. Chilton's identity remains a mystery." [2]

The Chiltons lived first in the area of Canterbury, Kent, England, where their first seven children were baptized, including Isabella. Their next three children were baptized at Sandwich. Mary was the youngest. [3] [4]

Sometime before 1615 the Chilton family had moved to Leiden, Holland.

In the Summer of 1620, James Chilton, his wife, and daughter Mary set out for the new world. Both James Chilton and his wife were to die on the Mayflower during the winter of 1620-21. She died on January 11, 1620/21.

Research Notes

DNA

mtDNA Results T2b+16288C[5] Three matrilineal (all female line) descendants of Mary (Chilton) Winslow have taken a full mtDNA test and have their results posted in various Family Tree DNA Projects such as the Mayflower DNA Project.[6][7] The three identified descendants descend from two different daughters [Mary (Winslow) Gray and Susanna (Winslow) Latham]. While it is not known whether any of these individuals have joined the General Society of Mayflower Descendants (GSMD), the fact they are exact mtDNA matches from two different daughters of Mary Chilton (wife of John Winslow) does provide an adequate level of "proof."[8]

The Haplogroup assigned to the full mtDNA results is T2b, but all three results include an additional HVR1 mutation at: 16288C.[9]

  7. In addition, there are a total of five individuals who are exact full mtDNA matches
  8. due to the rare nature of the T2b+16288C haplogroup
  9. It is hoped this additional mutation would form a new subclade of T2b at some time in the future.

Sue Allen will be publishing an update soon and a possible suspected mother of Mary Chilton. I have asked to see if she has searched for a direct mtDNA line to possibly run with other known descendants from the suspected line she thinks and am waiting to see if there is anything. I came here to see if any direct descendants through the Maternal line have mtDNA tested and unfortunately it looks as though they have not. Will update if/when I get more information.
Thank you, Aimee, for this information. Please do keep us updated when it is published.

Thanks Deb, her given name should be unknown also according to all the lists of passengers.

Should we remove her given name as well? Is there any evidence for the name Susanna?

Furner-147 and Furner-2 are not ready to be merged because: The merge should probably be into "unknown".

Furner-147 and Furner-2 appear to represent the same person because: These people have almost the same names, were born and died on the same day, in the same place. Are they the same person?
