Biography

Lucy (Grier) Bonds is a part of US Black heritage.

Lucy Bell Grier^[1] was born on 25 May^[2] probably in 1889,^[3][4] in either Florida^[5] or Alabama.^[6]

Lucy was using the surname Bonds when she was enumerated in 1910 and had been married for two years. She was enumerated by herself living on a rented farm in Leon County, Florida. She was employed as a cook for a private family.^[5]

Lucy may have been living in Twiggs County, Georgia, when her daughter Marion was born in Jeffersonville, Georgia, in 1921. Marion's father was Joe Ben Bonds.^[7]

In 1940, Lucy (age 49) and Joe Bonds were living in Wakulla, Florida. Also in the household were two daughters, the older daughter's husband, a niece, and another man whose relationship is not identified.^[8]

Joe died in December 1968 at the State Hospital.^[9] When Lucy died on 8 March 1982 in Wakulla County, Florida,^[2] she had been living in Crawfordsville, Wakulla County, for about 60 years.^[6] She was buried in the Garden of the Last Supper, Tallahassee Memory Gardens, Tallahassee, Florida.^[4]

Her obituary reported that she was a "native of Smith Station, Ala" and had a sister named "Mattie B. Johnson of Youngstown, Ohio." Two daughters survived her as well as grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

This obituary could be for a niece; Christine Brown of Youngstown Ohio was a daughter of a Mattie B. Johnson. It is unknown if Christine's mother was Lucy's sister.
