Biography

Hester (Unknown) Johnson was a Kentuckian.

Hester is one of my brick wall ancestors- know very little about her: first name, date of birth from Bible record, and 1850 census. ^[1]

Hester has died by 1860 when two of her children are living in Hardeman County, Tennessee.

Research Notes

• Kentucky Marriage Records, 1783-1965, years 1835-1845. A marriage record is not located for Willis, W. or William Johnson, and Hester in the timeframe in adjacent counties to Graves.^[2]

• Graves County borders the state of Tennessee so also reviewed marriage records in adjacent counties of Tennessee from 1835-1845 for Willis, William or W. Johnson to a Hester without locating a record. ^[3]

• FamilySearch Wiki for Graves County indicates marriage, deed or court records aren't available until 1888.[1].

• Woodson Johnson's Kentucky Death Certificate in 1921 records his mother as unknown. Mollie Johnson is the informant. ^[4]

• Her son, Abraham Johnson died in 1903 in Mississippi. Mississippi doesn't have death records available until 1912 according to familysearch wiki for Yalobusha County, Mississippi. [2]

• Query placed 26 Feb 2021on the Facebook page for Graves County, Kentucky Genealogy Society. '"Hi. I am looking for the maiden name and parents of Hester Unknown JOHNSON. She was born on 28 Jun 1809, in Tennessee. She was the second wife of Willis Johnson (1790-1857) and married about 1840. Willis is on the 1840 Graves County, KY Census as well as the 1850 Graves County Census. In 1860 two of their minor children, Abraham (1844-1903) and Woodson (1847-1921) are living in Hardeman County, TN with a Henry Johnson (born c1815 TN). The 1850 census is the last known record of Hester. Her birth is from the Johnson family Bible, which doesn't record her maiden name.

I have checked both KY and TN marriage records without locating a marriage for Willis and Hester. Graves's marriage records are available in 1888. Deeds and court records don't appear to be available until 1888 (familysearch wiki for Graves County, KY). Thanks in advance for any help with Hester JOHNSON's maiden name or parents."'[3]

• Johnson Family Bible Record gives Hester Johnson's first name, but no maiden name. It does provide an exact birth date, but no death date. The descendants of Abraham Johnson own the Bible. Original Bible Record owned by Mrs. Stallsworth.
