Sources

  • Vol. II, Backmatter (Index) p. 708, 751, 781
  • Pages 66 and ff show Martin Ulrich and many other subscribers from the Township of Lebanon who brought a petition of grievance regarding the division of Lancaster and Dauphin Counties. The petition suggested that the state's decision to locate Dauphin County's new center of judicature at "Harris' Ferry" (Harrisburg) was oppressive because it caused an inordinate amount of travel for the citizens of Lebanon Township and several other towns. Their petition was laid before the Assembly of the State of Pennsylvania ca. 1784. These lists provide a fairly reliable census of citizens living in each township ca. 1784, and they confirm that Martin Ulrich lived at Lebanon Township, which was then part of Dauphin County, not Lancaster County.

Pages 705-708 show a "Return of the assessments of Lebanon Township in the County of Dauphin, for the year 1785," which lists both "Christophr" and Martin Ulrich on page 708,

Pages 777-781 show "Taxable inhabitants of Dauphin County for the year 1787," a list that includes both Christopher and Martin Ulrich.

Vol. II, military rolls, 837, 847

Note: Page 837 shows "Muster Roll of the 2nd class 2nd Batalion Lancr. County Militia commanded by Capt. Michael Holderbaum on a tour of duty at Lancaster." Tour of duty May 1, 1781 to June 30, 1781, Martin Ulrich is part of a long list of men who provided substitutes. The name of the person who performed the tour of duty for him was: Adam Frocklick.

Page 847 lists the officers and privates (first through eighth class) in "Capt. Michael Holderbaum's Company it Being the second Company of the 2nd Battln of Lancaster County Militia" as of Dec. 25, 1781.

Apparently Martin Ulrich did do at least one tour of duty himself.

Note that Martin Ulrich served with the Second Lancaster County Militia and its history and records can be found in the archives here:

Publication Title: Pennsylvania Archives Short Description: The Pennsylvania State Archives published 10 series of historical records (138 volumes) covering the initial colonial settlement through the Civil War.

Collection Title: Pennsylvania Archives Series: Series 5 Volume: VII Chapter: Second Battalion Lancaster County Militia. Page: 172

Unfortunately some volumes have been withdrawn from Archive.org, and Volume due to "issues with content" and Vol. 7 is one of the missing.

Fortunately the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission has stepped into the breach by putting together a useful summary of the Lancaster County Revolutionary Militia, including the 1st and 2nd Battalions, with the names of commanding officers and useful links.
