Biography

Caroline was born in 1865 in Montgomery County, Missouri, to John D. Ulrich and Louisa Steinmeyer, who were both born in Germany.

The 1880 Census[1] shows her at age 14 in the home of her parents in Prairie Township, Montgomery County, Missouri.

She married Charles Camell "CC" Steele about 1884.

The 1900 Census[2] shows her at age 35 with her husband, an adopted daughter and a nephew living in Prairie Township (east part), Montgomery County, Missouri. This census reveals that they have been married for 16 years, and that she has not given birth to any children. It also shows her living next to her brother Phillip and his wife and children.

The 1910 Census[3] shows her at age 45 with her husband and nephew in Prairie Township, Montgomery County, Missouri.

The 1920 Census[4] shows her at age 53 with her husband in Prairie Township, Montgomery County, Missouri.

Charles Steele died in 1921.[5]

The 1930 Census[6] shows her at age 63 and widowed in Prairie Township, Montgomery County, Missouri.

On 2 Apr 1933, she married second, James Bartley Dillion,[7] [8] whose first wife, Lenora (Moore) Dillion had died two years earlier.

The 1940 Census[9] shows her at age 74 living with her widowed sister in Prairie Township, Montgomery County, Missouri. She is marked as married, but her spouse is not present.

Carrie died in 1942 in Missouri. Her death certificate shows her name as Carrie Hermena Dillion.[10] She was buried beside her first husband at the Fairmount Cemetery in Middletown, Montgomery County, Missouri, and the name given there is Caroline H. Steele.[11] (After his death, James Bartley Dillion was interred beside his first wife.)
