Biography

Disputed Family Member, see Research Notes

Sir Walter Tyrrell of Heron, East Horndon, Essex, England, East Horndon, Essex, England. He was the son of James Tyrrell and Margaret Heron, the daughter of Sir William Heron.[1]

Sir Walter married Jane, the daughter of John Swynford. [1]

Research Notes

There is some confusion with the Essex Visitation, there's quite a few errors in the pedigree, that recorded sources have exposed.[1] Other sources have James Tyrell's son Thomas Sr or Elder married Joan, and died about 1360, and that his brother and namesake 'Thomas' married Alice. Thomas and Alice' heir was Thomas's brother and sister-in-law, Walter and Eleanor.[2]

Yet, the pedigree from the Essex Visitation has been copied over and over again in numerous books.[1]Christopher Starr seems to have sorted through the Tyrell pedigree, from James Tyrell to Sir John Tyrell, using sources from various English records. [2] The Terrell Society of America had a chart that exams the traditional pedigree given in the Essex Visitation and the research of O.F. Brown, the Society records are no longer available .[3] Douglas Richardson also shows in his research one of the errors of the Visitation of Essex.[4][5] The Inquisition of Eleanor widow of Walter Tyrrell, gives possibly the best example of the relationship between Sir Thomas, Sir Walter and Sir John.[6]

Comparing the Traditional Pedigree against Feet of Fines Sources, & Inquisition:

James Tyrell married Margaret Heron from Feet of Fines, he had in 1305 spouse Alice, and daughter Joan. James must have married Margaret Heron as his 2nd wife.
Walter Tyrrell married Janne Swynford no record of a Walter Tyrrell and Janne Swynford, Walter was married to Eleanor Flambert.
Thomas the elder Tyrrell was married to Joan, which may have been Janne Swynford. It appears that whoever gave the original pedigree mixed up the three sons of James, and who they were married to. Thomas the elder, and Thomas the younger are the ones who increased the fortunes of the Tyrell family.
Thomas Tyrrell, married 1st Alice Dandeleghe, married 2nd Alenor Flambert. This entry mixed Thomas with his younger brother Walter. Thomas the younger was married to Alice, they were childless, and their heir was his brother Walter Tyrell married to Eleanor Flambert. [6]

Christopher Starr suggests that James Tyrell had three to four sons: James younger, Thomas the elder, Thomas the younger and Walter.[2] It appears that James was married twice, first to Alice, they had daughter Joan,[7] then James married Margaret Heron and had sons, Thomas the Elder, James, Thomas the younger and Walter. Eleanor Flambert's inquisition shows that Thomas the younger and Walter were brothers.[6]

It appears that there wasn't a Sir Walter, as parents for Thomas and Walter, that there isn't a Walter in that time period, but that the children given to him, belong to James and Margaret. It is likely that a Thomas, Senior was married to Jane/Jone. It appears that James had two sons named Thomas, senior and Thomas the younger, that their heir was their youngest brother Walter.
