Lewis W. Tyrrell
"Lewis W. Tyrrell, well-know insurance man and one of the most prominent citizens of Woolstock, Iowa, was born in Buffalo, New York, on June 25, 1836, the son of Manlius and Esther (Lewis) Tyrrell, the former born in Manilus , Genessee county, New York, and the latter at Buffalo, New York. Manlius Tyrrell, after his school days, learned the trade of blacksmith, which work he followed in his native state until 1848, and then moved to the state of Wisconsin, locating in Rock county, where he followed his trade and farmed until 1851, when he moved to Fayette county, Iowa, and settled in West Union, there engaging in the duties of his trade, until 1862, when he died. Esther, the widow of Manlius Tyrrell, survived her husband until the year 1896. Manlius and Esther Tyrrell were the parents of six children, of whom Lewis W., the subject of this sketch, is the only one living in Wright county.
Lewis W. Tyrrell was educated in the public schools of New York state and in the common schools of Wisconsin, after which he became a salesman in a store in Albany, Wisconsin. Three years later Mr. Tyrrell moved to Iowa, and worked with his father as a blacksmith a short time and the bought the business of his father, which he conducted for some time, and then having prepared himself for the practice of law, he went to Clear Lake, Iowa, where he was admitted to the county bar and where he engaged in the practice of his profession for four years. Later, Mr. Tyrrell moved to the state of Kansas, where he lived as an attorney at law, for eight years, and then, in 1889, he came to Woolstock township, Wright county, Iowa, where in a short time, he was elected to serve his community in the office as justice of the peace, an office which he has occupied for twenty-five years. In addition to his official duties,L. W. Tyrrell is engaged in the insurance business, representing the Aetna Fire Insurance Company, as well as other standard companies.
During the year 1854, Lewis W. Tyrrell was married to Lucinda Davis, the daughter of Louis and Sarah (Olds) Davis, and to this marriage have been born two children, Walestein W. and Blanche. Lucinda, the wife of Lewis W. Tyrrell, died at an early age, after which Mr. Tyrrell was married secondly, to Flora Young, the daughter of Andrew B. and Elizabeth (Gardner) Young. To this marriage have been born four children: Elizabeth married Otis Jones; Hattie who married Attil Morey; Ethey, who married Otis Jones; and Sarah, who married Josie Robinson. Mr. Tyrrell and his family are member of the Methodist Episcopal church of Woolstock.
L. W. Tyrrell, for more than twenty years, was the choice of his people for mayor of Woolstock, and during a long and active life Mr. Tyrrell has done much for the improvement and advancement of the community and its interests. In politics, he is an ardent Republican.
In fraternal circles, Mr. Tyrrell is prominently affiliated, being past noble grand of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and is also a member of the Rebekah and encampment lodges."
