Guy Hanford or Hanford (or Ham) as he was called by his parents was not a good student. He was removed from public school in his senior year and placed in Stony Brook Academy. He entered Williams College but withdrew upon the request of the College after the first semester. His father was not pleased and Hanford went to New York City to work as a Wall Street runner.
He met Margaret Louise McBride in the "village" and began a relationship. Margaret became pregnant and they decided to marry when she was eight months into the pregnancy.
His father was furious and disowned him. After the birth and naming of their second child (Guy Hanford, III) his parents relented and he was readmitted into the fold.
Although not having the formal education of his siblings he was bright and self taught in many subjects. He excelled in mechanical skills and knowledge. Electronics became a hoppy and he spent many hours building amplifiers, speakers, turntables, tuners and radios. He was often involved in fix ups and home repair, frequently using unique designs of his own.
Although often perceived as distant and a not involved parent by his children, he was an indulgent grandparent, particularly to the children of his son Michael.
