Note: I have recently received the Bible records for Thomas Wade Peckinpaugh and am interested in an entry as follows: Children of Peter & Catherine Peckinpaugh 8. Mary b. Feb 11 1780 m April 15 1795 Jefferson Co KY to Jonathan Tullis. Which Jonathan Tullis might this be as Catherine Tullis Peckinapugh (Bruner?), the mother, is a sister to Jonathan Tullis, and daughter of Moses Tullis. From: Martha Hartley, mamohartley at prodigy.net
Note: The family name appears to have been Beckenbach in the early 1700's, with some family members varying the spelling to Beckenbaugh, and in some cases to Peckinbaugh.
History shows Beckenbach family in the Darmstadt, Germany area in 1241. Darmstadt is about 35 miles from the village of Eiterbach. Johann Adam Beckenbach died from an accident when he went to get his children from a church festival in the village of Heddesbach. Johann's widow left for America in 1751 with her 11 children. They arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on the ship "Janet" 7 Oct 1751. In Maryland Beckenbach became Beckenbaugh; in West Virginia Pickenpaugh became the preferred spelling. In Kentucky and Indiana the name was Peckinpaugh. The ones who lived for a time in Illinois used Pickenpaugh. The ones who went to California in the 1850s made a change to become Peckinpahs. No descendant of the family who arrived in 1751 retained the original Becenbach spelling.
This was recorded from a letter by Peter Beckenbach's son - "My father came to America some time in the 1850s when he was 44 or 45. He did not want to serve in the German Army so he left when it was time for him to serve. He came across the water on a sail ship which took 42 days to cross, tossed about in heavy storms. Evidently before 1871, when a unified Germany finally became a reality, boys in Baden were registered for the military serve at age 16. Potential recruits were drawn by lottery. They had to report in Dec or Jan before their 21st birthday. Peter's brother Nicholas had already left Germany for the U.S. on 15 Aug 1859. Peter, age 18, arrived in New York aboard the ship American "Congress", a clipper ship. He had traveled from Germany to London, England and then to America."
