Biography

Robert Tucker, a Norfolk County merchant ("formerly of Barbadoes"), married Frances Courtney in 1705 in Fauquier, Virginia. Frances was the daughter of Mr. Courtenay and his wife Frances (source: Mother Frances' will abstract).

[1] [2].

They had at least four children, who were named in his 1722 will. After his death, his widow married Thomas Nelson, merchant, of Yorktown, Virginia.[2]

A 1736 deed between John Tucker and Thomas and Frances Nelson names Thomas Nelson as husband of Frances, relict of Robert Tucker, and John as "son of said Robert and Frances."

Children

Robert Tucker's 1722 will named the following children[2].

  • Robert[3], which says that Thomas Newton m Martha Tucker, dau. of Col. Robert Tucker. (See Frances Courtenay's profile, which quotes from "Berkeley Manuscripts" that Frances Tucker, widow of Robert Tucker, of Barbadoes, [was] mother of Col. Robert Tucker, of Norfolk.")
  • John[2]
  • Courtenay
  • Sarah

Research Notes

Birth year of 1690 was a guess based on his death in 1722, four children (one born every 2 years: 1715, 1717, 1719, 1721), leading to a guess of a 1714 marriage and him being about 25 at time of marriage. Guess was revised to 1680 based on information in his wife's Find a Grave memorial (see FAG memorial for Courtney-94) that quoted a contemporary obituary saying that she died "in her 84th year of her age," in June 1766.
