Surname Origins

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tucker_(surname)#:~:text=Tucker%20can%20also%20be%20an,myriad%20examples%20may%20be%20cited.

Birth

Circa 1619, based on a Suffolk County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, court deposition.[1] The 1895 claim by Ephraim Tucker[2] that he was the son of Robert and Susan (Barlow) Tucker wasn't based on credible evidence and has been refuted in "The Descendants of William Tucker of Throwleigh, Devon" by Robert Dennard Tucker (1991).

Marriage

There are one primary and two heresay sources for his marriage to Martha (surname unknown). The primary record, if the transcription is accurate, says February 1651, as it appears in Arnold's "Rhode Island Vital Extracts.[3] Ephraim Tucker states the marriage was on the 9th day of the 11th month 1651, but provides no source. He says he took all but one of Henry and Martha's children's birth records from a family Bible (location or owner not given), so this may also be his marriage source. The third source, according to Ephraim Tucker in a footnote, is in "Dr. George H. Tucker’s “Genealogy” of Henry Tucker, he states the record reads thus: “Henry and Martha were married in ye 11th moneth, in ye year 1653-4,” the eleventh month being January on the Julian calendar used at the time.

In some personal, online genealogy databases, Martha is given the surname Shaw with no reason or source given. Martha was born circa 1630, and died on 9 Nov 1697.

Children

Henry and Martha Tucker had seven children: four daughters and three sons.[4]

  1. Abraham Tucker. Born on October 13, 1653 at Portsmouth, Newport County, Rhode Island Colony.
  2. John Tucker. Born on August 28, 1656 at Shrewsbury, Monmouth County, Province of East Jersey (now New Jersey).

  5. James Tucker 03/16/1665 Dartmouth, Bristol, MA
  6. Mary Tucker 08/16/1668 Sandwich, Barnstable, MA

After doing extensive research on Ancestry, it shows that Henry Tucker is my 9th Great Grandfather. I am very fascinated by the early American history branching through the Tucker side of my family. They traveled all across the country over the centuries to acquire land and farm. My Tucker lineage in America starts with Henry in Massachusetts, then to Delaware, North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, then to Texas where many Tuckers have resided for generations. My Grandfather moved from Texas to California where he met my Grandmother. Thanks to this article I plan to visit the area noted as Tucker Farm Road in Massachusetts in the Spring and experience the history of the area since I've never been. If anyone is able to suggest any other areas in Massachusetts I can go to research the early Tucker settlers I would appreciate the advice!
There are several things claimed in this profile that aren't supported by credible evidence, and I've been trying trace the origin of the mistakes. First, Henry wasn't the son of Robert and Susan (Barlow). The source cited in the profile is an 1895 book by Ephraim Tucker. Tucker found a reference to a Tucker family in the "Visitation of Devonshire" with a son Henry born in 1619 and jumped to the conclusion that he immigrated to New England. This has been refuted in "The Descendants of William Tucker of Throwleigh, Devon" by Robert Dennard Tucker (1991). The "Visitations" were published accounts of high status families in England, which is why it was available to Ephraim Tucker in the US in the first place. Although the "Visitation of Devonshire" doesn't say anything further about Henry, son of Robert and Susan, it turns out that he stayed in England and had a family there. It has already been suggested in the comment below that they be severed as Henry's parents. This should be done. The connection doesn't fit Wikitree standards.

Another big problem is the claim that Henry married Martha Shaw. I found this claim mostly in personal, online genealogy databases and in several self-published genealogies. It has gained traction from repetition, but no one has given any credible evidence of this marriage and I haven't found any. It appears to be another internet fabrication.

The citations 1 and 2 in this profile aren't connected to reliable sources and should be replaced. Filby, the #3 citation, gives no information about Henry's immigration or a connection to Robert and Susan. Unfortunately, "Martha Shaw" has her own profile page, so it would be up to one of the profile managers there to changed her LNAB to "Uknown." I'm going to delete the part of the biography that says he was the son of Robert and Susan and the part that says Robert, Susan and Henry immigrated in 1620 (!) and that Martha's last name was Shaw and that they were married in Winchester, England.

I found a deposition by Henry Tucker in Suffolk County court records in 1653 here: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSVR-69JM-T?i=130&cat=240378

He gives his age as 34 or thereabouts. If there is other information in this deposition that might identify his origin I'm not seeing it, though there are many other pages related to case #225, I doubt they involve him.

If the coincidence of his age given in this deposition, which I believe is the one mentioned on page 298 of Genealogy of the Tucker Family from Various Authentic Sources, with that of the Henry Tucker in the Visitation of Devonshire, also on that page, is the only thing linking him to Robert Tucker and Susan Barlow I would recommend severing that connection. https://archive.org/details/genealogyoftucke00tuck_0/page/298/mode/2up

Hi PMs, did Henry Tucker marry twice, once to Martha Unknown, and once to Martha Shaw, or is Martha Shaw the same person as Martha Unknown? Do you have a source for the surname 'Shaw' for Henry's wife? I see that there is source for a marriage of Henry Tucker in 1651, which seems to fit, and sources for a mother Martha of the children. Also any sources for whether Martha was born in England or an American colony? It would be great to sort all this out before merges of the wives is completed. Thanks. Gillian

Tucker-2248 and Tucker-345 appear to represent the same person because: Similar birth and death details and wife. Daughter Sarah mentioned in bio of Tucker-2248. Thanks for reviewing this potential merge.

Tucker-6050 and Tucker-2248 appear to represent the same person because: same spouse name on both profiles (in process of merge), same son John on both profiles (in process of merge). I realize the dates and locations are different and if you decide these are not the same person then the shared spouse should be removed from one. Thank you for reviewing. Teresa (WikiTree Arborist)

John Tucker: With regard to Henry B Shaw 1655, it would be better if you could provide evidence to support his being a son of Henry and Martha, rather than to ask us to go looking for it. Do you have records you would like us to see?

If one could find the deposition which Henry wrote it may help connect him to his parents definitively. The deposition was made in 1653 in Suffolk County Court (Boston).

Tucker-2248 and Tucker-5892 appear to represent the same person because: All of the information matches though one birth date seems to be a firm, and the other is listed as "about". Also Mother's names are the same and birth dates are within probable proximity.
