Biography

Mary was born in 1934, third child, second daughter of Lawrence Tryon and Mary Bradshaw [1]. She married Delbert Gene Carter in 1952 and they had four children. She died in 2017.

June 5, 1934 - November 2, 2017
Longtime Guthrie resident, Mary Kathryn (Grandma Kay) Carter died Thursday, November 2, 2017 in her home at 83 years of age. The daughter of Larry and Mary Bradshaw Tryon was born on June 5, 1934 in Hutchinson, Kansas. Kay graduated from Guymon High School in 1952. On May 10, 1979, she graduated Cum Laude from Central State University in Edmond, Oklahoma, where she was a member of the Alpha Chi Honor Society.
On July 22, 1952, Kay united in marriage with Delbert Carter. She joined her new husband in the ministry in the United Methodist Church in December 1952 and lived throughout the state for the next 27 years. Delbert and Kay, with three of their four children, moved to Guthrie in June, 1974 to pastor the First United Methodist Church for the next five years. She was a member of the church at the time of her death.
Kay was an Oklahoma First Family and throughout her life she was always volunteering. She was volunteer with Rainbow Girls as Mother Advisor, Girl Scouts as a Troop Leader, Western State Hospital as a weekly entertainment musician, Logan County Hospital auxiliary, Red Cross, Guthrie Chamber of Commerce, Docent for Guthrie Museums, Logan County Election Board and various committees within the church and sang in numerous church choirs. She enjoyed traveling for genealogical research and gardening, but mostly, she loved taking care of her family.
Kay was predeceased by her husband, Delbert; parents, Larry Tryon and Mary Tryon; her sister Myrna Thomas and brother Allison Charles Tryon.
Surviving family is a son, Lawrence Gene Carter of Edmond and 3 daughters: Mary Debra and husband Terry Holcomb of Edmond, Oklahoma; Rebecca Lynn Adams and husband Stephen of Lawton, Oklahoma; and Donna Ann and husband Stacy Russell of Guthrie. Also, surviving are her grandsons: Jeremy Gamble and wife Kayla, Tucker Holcomb and wife Christina, Daniel Adams and wife Alisha, Travis Adams, Zachary Carter, Joshua Russell and wife Cynthia, Jeff Russell and wife Kari and great -grandchildren Natalie Kay, John, Emma, Bree, Samantha Leia and Johnnie.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, November 7, 2017 at First United Methodist Church with Reverend Alan Nagel officiating. A private family burial will be held. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, Guthrie.
Memorial donations in Kay's name, may be made to Heifer International at www.heiferinternational.org or mailed to Heifer International, 1 World Avenue, Little Rock, AR 72202.
There will be no visitation.
