Joseph was born in January 1871 in South Australia, but as yet no birth registration has been found in that state's records.
Joseph Patrick Francis Travers was an Australian cricketer who played in one Test Match in 1902 and was a First Class cricketer for South Australia. He also played Australian rules football for Norwood in the South Australian Football Association (SAFA) during the 1890s. After his first class cricket career ended, Joe worked for many years on the Administration side of the game. Coaching at the junior level, managing at the Sheffield Shield level and as a state selector. He is credited with convincing and arranging for Don Bradman to move to South Australia in 1935.
Joe Travers played his first match for South Australia at the Inter-colonial level in 1895-6, and his last in 1906-7. And was credited with 117 wickets in his 37 first-class games at 31.39 runs each. He played his one and only Test Match, against the touring England team at Melbourne from February 28 - March 04, 1902 as a late replacement for the injured J. V. Saunders.
Joe Travers passed away in September 1942, and is buried in the Payneham Cemetery in Payneham, South Australia, Australia. He married Mabel May in 1895. It is worth noting that at the time of her passing in 1927, her death notice lists Joseph Travers and daughters as her chief mourners. At least one daughter was Eileen May Travers born in about 1895, who married firstly in 1916 the again in 1942, not long after her father's death.
