William was born in 1864. He was the son of Richard Townes and Eliza Meek. He passed away in 1897.
William Carnot Townes was born in Yalobusha County, Mississippi, 20th day of August, 1864. In December, 1869, his mother moved to Oxford to secure better educational advantages for her children. William entered the Preparatory Department of the State University at the age of 13 and was graduated from the same institution in his 20th year. In the Autumn of the same year -- 1884 --he entered the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania, whence he was graduated on May 1, 1887. During the last two years of his stay in Philadelphia he was connected with the German Hospital. In July, 1887, he located in Chattanooga for the practice of his profession. In 1889, he spent four months in the hospitals of Berlin, Paris and London. During his visit to Europe he was elected Professor of Chemistry and Nervous Diseases in the Chattanooga Medical College and served in the capacity until his resignation, March, 1896. He was also an active member of the Tri-State Medical Society and served one term as president of the Chattanooga Medical Society. He was always keenly alive to every advancement in the science of medicine, thereby contributing to the relief and welfare of his fellow creatures. An attack of apoplexy on November 1, 1897, ended in his death after a few hours of suffering.[1]
