Jean Toomer is Notable.

Jean Toomer was an American poet and novelist associated with the Harlem Renaissance.[1]

Nathan Pinchback "Jean" Toomer was born in Washington, D.C. on December 26, 1894,[2] the son of Nathan Toomer and Nina Pinchback.[3] His father abandoned the family not long after Nathan was born. His mother, daughter of a biracial former Louisiana politician, died in 1909, and subsequently he lived with his maternal grandparents in Washington D.C.,[4][5][6] where he graduated from M Street High School in 1914.[3]

Best known as the author of Cane (1923), an influential novel about African-American life in the rural South, based on his experiences in Sparta, Georgia,[3] he was living in Manhattan by 1930.[7]

He married Margery Bodine Latimer of Wisconsin in 1931.[3] They had one child together, born in Chicago the following year. Margery died of complications of the birth. Their daughter, Margery Latimer Toomer, survived.[8]

He married Marjorie Content, a New York photographer, in 1934 in Taos, New Mexico.[9] She had a son and daughter from a prior marriage,[10] but they had no children together.[9] In 1940 he and Marjorie bought a home in rural Bucks County, Pennsylvania, where he and the two Marjories were living when the census was taken.[11]

He and Marjorie remained together in Bucks County until his death in a nursing home in Doylestown, Bucks, Pennsylvania on 30 March 1967.[3][9][12]

Hi there profile managers! We plan on featuring Jean alongside Romare Bearden and other participants in the Harlem Renaissance in the Connection finder on September 2. Between now and then is a good time to take a look at the sources and biography to see if there are updates and improvements that need made, especially those that will bring it up to WikiTree Style Guide standards. A Team member will check on the profile closer to the week we'll feature it and make changes as necessary.

Thanks! Abby
