John Rowe Tonkin, son of William and Margaret, was baptised 10 Mar 1833 in Sancreed, Cornwall, England. [1]
He married Elizabeth Jane Mitchell 11 Feb 1854 in St Just in Penwith, Cornwall. [2]
John and his family emigrated to South Australia on the Nile arriving at Port Adelaide on 19 Feb 1855. [3]
He passed away age 65 on 2 Sep 1899 in Moonta Mines [4] and was buried in Moonta Cemetery. [5]
Mr John R. Tonkin, an old resident of the Moonta district, passed away at his residence, Hamley Mine, on Saturday last, aged 65 years and 8 months. Although deceased had been ailing for a number of years, his death was sudden and unexpected. He leaves a grown-up family. The funeral took place on Monday, the Rev. H. Parkinson conducting the burial service. Mr J. Snell was the undertaker.[6]
