Leonard John Tonkin was a storekeeper for Booth Macdonald & Co., when he enlisted in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force on 5 Oct 1916. He was described as being 5' 6", 168 lb with a fair complexion, light hazel eyes and very fair hair. His religion was Methodist. He embarked from Wellington on 12 Feb 1917.

Rifleman Leonard John Tonkin of the 3rd Bn NZ Rifle Brigade died 29 Oct 1917 at the No 5 General Hospital in Rouen, from wounds that he received on 12 Oct 1917. He was 23 years old. He was buried in St Sever Cemetery Extention Rouen in France.
