Alfred John Tonkin son of Samuel and Jane Elizabeth was born 15 Feb 1874 and baptised 22 Mar 1874 in Stoke Damerel, Devon [1][2]
On the 22 July 1889 Alfred joined the Royal Navy, and was made Petty Officer in 1910 [3]
Petty Officer 1st Class Alfred John Tonkin was killed when H.M. Yacht Sanda was sunk off the Belgian coast on 25 Sep 1915. His body was not recovered. He is commemorated at the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
