He emigrated to Victoria, Australia arriving in Jun 1873 on the Queen of Nations with his father Henry, step-mother Mary and brother Henry [2]
He married Mary Elizabeth Pascoe in 1889 in Victoria, Australia.[3]

James died in 1926 in Hawthorn, Victoria, aged 59 years.[5] and was buried at Boroondara General Cemetery in Kew, Victoria.[6]
TONKIN On the 28th June at his residence, 10 Oak street Hawthorn, Rev. James Tonkin, beloved husband of Lily, and loving father of Mabel (Mrs Barker) Lily (Mrs Lord) Emmie (Mrs Greening) and Frederick. Aged 59 years. no flowers. [7]
